5 New Years Resolutions for your Payroll & Business

STREAMLINE YOUR W2 PROCESS FOR YEAR-END

Does it typically take you a while to get your W2s out to your employees? Do you and your team spend days stuffing and sealing envelopes? Don’t forget that your time is valuable. Relying on outdated systems to get your year-end processes completed seems silly with all of the technology available to us. It may be time to look at a new payroll system or provider, one that saves you and your team time and offers a streamlined process to make year-end less, rather than more, stressful.

DELEGATE

Quite simply, if you don’t delegate, you won’t get out of people what you need. Delegating frees up your own time for the things that are your job. Remember the delegation basics are:

  • Scope – what specifically needs to be done and when is it due
  • Resources – what and who can they use to achieve this
  • Responsibility – what do they have the authority to change unilaterally
  • Reward – what is the motivation (money, recognition, career, etc.)
  • Priority – how this task gets ordered against existing work
PLAN YOUR WEEK

Have you developed a method or a system that allows you to fulfill all of your tasks successfully and achieve your goals without your relationships, both social and emotional, suffering? Our brains love routines and there are many reasons why they’re good for us.

Benefits of having a routine are:

  • Minimizing uncertainty because you already know what you’re doing
  • Clearer thinking because your brain is not overwhelmed with information and decisions
  • Saving energy
  • Improving your focus and attention
  • Preparing for what’s coming

“Don’t be fooled by the calendar. There are only as many days in the year as you make
use of. One man get’s only a week’s value out of a year while another man gets a full
year’s value out of a week.” ~Charles Richards

SET ASIDE ONE TIME SLOT FOR READING EMAILS OR INDUSTRY NEWS

We’re all constantly bombarded with notifications for all types: email, phone, news, social media, etc. Stop getting distracted by turning off notifications or logging out of apps at a certain time. Set aside a block of time during your day to do these tasks so that you aren’t constantly being pulled to look at the next email that pops into your inbox.

CREATE DAILY WORK HABITS AND STICK TO THEM

Building a habit requires a combination of regularly deciding to do the behavior and actually doing it. Each of us has small routines with mini habits that we perform each day that push us forward, like a morning routine that includes brushing our teeth and getting ready for the day. Make a plan when you’re attempting to build a new habit. If you begin your workday without a to-do list, this can leave you feeling unprepared and unproductive. Set yourself up for success and make a plan. This way, you won’t forget anything and will feel better about accomplishing all the necessary tasks. Write down some priority tasks that need to be tackled first and have all your other tasks work around those.
